The Pub Route is a roadmap to the heart of outback western NSW, told through the places where stories have always been shared face-to-face – the pubs. Long before stories were written down, they were passed across bars and verandahs, shaped by the people who lived and worked the land and the travellers who passed through.
As inland Australia developed, towns such as Walgett, Bourke and Cobar grew around mining and pastoral trade, with pubs becoming vital social hubs that connected communities spread across vast distances. Along stock routes and coach roads, pubs once appeared every 10 to 20 miles, offering rest, supplies and connection. Many have since disappeared, leaving behind ruins, markers and stories waiting to be rediscovered.
The Pub Route reconnects travellers with these places and their histories through mapped routes, on-ground markers, local pubs and supporting resources. This website is the starting point – the real stories are found on the road, in the pubs, and in the people you meet along the way.
